British Consul General to Toronto, Fouzia Younis MBE, recently visited Guy’s and St Thomas’ (GSTT) in an event organised by Clinical Scientific Computing (CSC). We were delighted to have Fouzia with us to discuss, among other things, our ongoing collaborations with colleagues in Canada.

The British Consul General recently kickstarted a partnership between six paediatric hospitals in the UK, including GSTT’s Evelina London Children’s Hospital, and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto. SickKids is a world-class teaching hospital that is dedicated to improving children’s health in Canada.

CSC is currently collaborating with AI experts at SickKids. Significantly, their team has successfully implemented various AI solutions while operating within an ethics and governance space that is notoriously difficult to negotiate. Like SickKids, CSC would also like to conduct real-time monitoring of live data for post-deployment surveillance and to develop an ethics framework for the use of AI at GSTT. Fouzia was particularly interested in how this collaboration is going.

During Fouzia’s visit, we discussed other ongoing AI initiatives within GSTT. The event also provided an opportunity for us to learn from Fouzia, who spoke of how the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) can help us effectively work with our colleagues in Canada.

As the British Consul General to Toronto, Fouzia is the representative of the UK government in Toronto. But her diplomatic career extends well beyond this appointment. Fouzia’s previous diplomatic assignments include leading UK strategic efforts across the Gulf Cooperation Council region, supporting the UK’s security and humanitarian efforts in Bangladesh, and serving in Sri Lanka during the conflict period.

In addition to members of the CSC team, representatives from the Centre for Innovation, Transformation and Improvement (CITI); Evelina London Children’s Hospital; and King’s Health Partners (KHP) were present.
